I might finally be a convert to Dollhouse

I finally watched the most recent Dollhouse. I hadn’t watched it last Friday because it was playing opposite a new Supernatural (which was amazing) and I just couldn’t warm up to Dollhouse. I tried, since it started, but it just wasn’t happening. The non-consensual nature of the sex between dolls and client really bothered me. If a doll is programmed to say yes to a client, she does not really have free will, does she? As well, I just couldn’t find myself emotionally engage with Echo.
Tonight things were slow and NTV was showing the episode I missed. I was impressed from the first few seconds to the last. The fake documentary frame was interesting and directly addressed the concerns I had, as did the doll abuse sub-plot. At least they are acknowledging the issue and its complexity.
I still am not emotionally invested in Echo, but I am rapidly warming up to some of the other characters. Victor, interesting as the Russian mob dude, was heartbreaking as the little boy who wants get close to the girl he loves but doesn’t really know what is going on.
Paul, the obsessive FBI agent, was also terrific. His reactions when accidentally running into Echo the first time, and his conversation with the game mogul client were very well scripted and acted. The relationship development with his neighbour endearing as well. Lots of potential angst coming up in that pairing.
So now I guess, I’ve got another fandom. Oh well, when one door closes, another opens. Stargate Atlantis is no more, so I guess I have more time. Let’s hope the direction of this episode, with it’s tight plot and character development is where the show will continue to go.
