Ok, so sometimes I use the speakers to listen to podfic and need to have something that will not make my kids or husband question my sanity if they overhear it out of context. Hense, I've loaded up a fair amount of gen podfic each time I swap things out. I've already reced "Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit" (Star Trek) and "Sailor's Delight" (SGA/Buffy) so you can find the links in earlier posts. ( Here are some new favourites: )

how dean's mind works
Apr. 26th, 2009 11:31 am![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
“Calm down! So, okay – the fairy queen? Is this Mab, or Titania we're talking about?”
Dean stares. “Oh my God. Dude. Could you possibly be any more gay?” he exclaims in disgust, after a long, startled silence.
Sam snorts. “Well, yeah, Dean. I could actually sleep with guys. That would do it. Look, don't go getting pissy with me just because you don't know Shakespeare from Tennyson.”
Dean shakes his head sadly. “I don't even know what language you're speaking now. All I can hear is blah blah blah pretentious bullshit blah blah blah I like poetry blah blah blah Sammy is an enormous girl.”
“Some of us actually listened to the teachers in High School, Dean.”
Another part inspired this picture. To understand it, go read the great brother banter in the story. http://pandarus.livejournal.com/267923.html

I'm published on Wraithbait...weeee.
Apr. 24th, 2009 11:00 pmWhen I was at the peek of my SGA obsession, I used to read Wraithbait every day. My reading in this fandom faded about the time that the SG-1 guys took over the show and started killing off the great characters and sacrificing the interesting relationship of the team members with the Mckay/Keller romance thread. I stopped being monogamus and started seeing other fandoms.

Funny post about readers not commenting
Apr. 23rd, 2009 01:21 pmThere is a very funny post with ideas about exactly why people don't comment. Why Aren't People Commenting on my Post/Story/Whatever? by

If you want a belly laugh go check out the latest in the Babbydaddy series by pandarus http://pandarus.livejournal.com/267047.html. In this one young John goes to kindergarden. My favourite part is him explaining his art to his teacher:
“That's a very interesting picture, John! Can you tell me what it is?”
“That's uncle Sammy. His eyes are kind of black because he's a little bit evil sometimes. He's smiting the unrighteous.”
“...”
“This bit's the demon coming out. It looks like smoke. Smoking is bad for you.”
Here is my guess at what that picture might look like.

the mother of invention
Apr. 21st, 2009 11:06 pmI broke out a dvd and taught myself to make screen captures since there are so few images of Constantine on the web. Now I don't have to go on my crappy crappy dial up to slowly download images. I can just take over my husband's computer for a few minutes armed with a dvd. I was starting to get frustrated looking for backgrounds or shots of Sam/Dean at the right angle. The typical screencaptures try to get their faces, often in close up. That doesn't always work for what I'm trying to do.
One thing more to learn: how to post a big picture. I made some banners at 700 x 300. Whenever I post to LJ from my computer files it automatically restricts the size to something much smaller (no bigger than 400). I have to figure out how to get around this since I see other large works on other peoples pages. Does anyone out there know what to do? Or do you know someone that knows?

Castiel/Anna pic and a SPN rec
Apr. 18th, 2009 08:07 pmYesterday I rec'ed two crackfic by Pandarus. I'm back today with something more serious. When I checked my flist this afternoon I read this:
She finds Castiel in Rome, in the Vatican, standing in front of Michelangelo's statue of the Pieta. He stands up a little straighter when she arrives, but does not look over his shoulder or otherwise acknowledge her presence. Anna watches him, and thinks about what a good soldier he has always been.
This is from "Cries Like Dead Letters" ( http://pandarus.livejournal.com/265495.html) which is set post 4.16. She does an excellent job creating the voices and thoughts of Anna and Castiel. As a former art major, that opening image stuck in my mind. this pieta has always been one of my favourite works of art. So, a while later...one more manipulation. I spent some hours reading through Pandarus' various fan fic and it was well worth the time.
I can't believe I'm rec'ing mpreg (SPN)
Apr. 17th, 2009 11:00 pmI have a soft spot for kidfic and fic with main characters in happy domestic situations. However, I've never warmed up to mpreg. Most of what I have read over several fandoms is silly, not make you smile silly, just plain old "this makes no sense" silly. For that reason I was shocked at how much I liked both "Babbydaddy" (featuring a shocked knocked up Dean, Sam, and babbydaddy Castiel) and its sequel "Best of All" (featuring said baby as a three year old, with Uncle Sam and Aunt Ruby babysitting) by pandarus. http://pandarus.livejournal.com/264348.html and http://pandarus.livejournal.com/265204.html
These two fics made me laugh out loud. They are written entirely as unattributed dialog, but the voices are so in character that there is no problem figuring out who is speaking. There are allusions to sex but nothing graphic. The best part is that this author has her tongue firmly planted in her cheek in same way as Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy or Pushing Daisies.
Here is snippet where Sam has been reading Where the Wild Things Are and his nephew critiques Ruby on her participation.
“Okay. Where were we? Right. Ahem... And he came to the place where the wild things are. They roared their terrible roars.”
“ROAR! Aun' Wooby, you have to roar.”
“Oh! Okay, sorry, kid. I'm kinda new to this. ROAR! That okay?”
“Yes. That was a very good roar.”
“Cool. Go me.”
“Mommy*, can I read you ‘The Thirsty Moose’?” said my six year old.
“Alright if I can type this out at the same time,” I replied as I continued to work on this post.
I read—a lot. Usually I go through three novels a week, a few magazines and newspapers, and hours and hours of fan fiction. In a pinch, if I’m bored I’ll read anything, even a car manual. There is no room in my house that you can’t find a book, especially the bathrooms.
“ ‘ Go ahead and try,’ said the big Moose.” The book is turned around to show the picture before going on with the story.
My bathroom has it’s own bookshelf to house all the books I have been reading that month. I set my alarm 45 minutes ahead of everyone else in my house so that I can soak in a hot tub and read undisturbed. It’s worth losing a bit of sleep since it is the only uninterrupted reading time I get every day. All other reading happens while multi-tasking or ignoring music/tv/whatever.
“What is this word, Mommy?” Small finger points at a word.
“Important”
Since I can’t get my computer in the tub with me to read on-line, I buy books. Today it was three television tie-in novels: Torchwood- Almost Perfect; Stargate Atlantis-Angelus, and Stargate Atlantis- Nightfall. Stargate Atlantis novels are usually pretty tame compared to the fan fic.
“Now I’m going to ask you some questions about the book,” she says pressing the open book to her chest so I can't cheat. “What was Big Moose’s problem?”
“I didn’t know there was going to be a test.”
However, get a load of this excerpt from the Torchwood back cover: “Ianto Jones woke up this morning with no memory of last night. He went to work, where he caused amusement, suspicion and a little bit of jealousy. Because Ianto Jones woke up this morning in the body of a woman.”
“Here is my favourite part.”
This is what I love about Torchwood. No matter how crack fan fic gets, Torchwood makes it look like cannon. Ships, check. Slash, check. Time travel, check. AU, check. Hurt/comfort, check. PWP, check. Gender switch, check. Man, I love this show. It has the added bonus of being a conversation starter, to talk to my kids about what the word “gay” really means. Big bi-sexual and hot action hero, check.
“I’m going to go get another book.” Ahh. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. She’s bound to be a readaholic too, and maybe a teacher.
* Canadians write this word like Americans and say it like the Brits. Yah, we're weird like that. We do it the other way round with some words, writing them like British English but pronoucing them as American.

Whumped Sam icon
Apr. 14th, 2009 11:02 pmThis pic is for maychorian (or her little sister Talitha *waves hi*) who is collecting a list of hurt Sam Supernatural fic over at http://maychorian.livejournal.com/106393.html
She said she didn't have an icon for whumped Sam.
Man, this was harder than I thought. I looked through many screencaps (some great ones are at http://stripedwall.com/gallery.php?dir=television) of Sam during scenes that I remember really feeling the "oh, don't hurt Sammy any more you cruel writers" vibe. However, when you isolate a hurt Sam face out of context, often it looks like some other emotion or thought. I passed over dozens of variations of hurt Dean/sad Dean/beat up but defiant Dean before I found this pic. I guess Jared P's voice and body language are needed to portray the full range of these particular emotions. Jensen A can show it just in the facial expressions.
Art for Hard Prayer (Stargate Atlantis)
Apr. 12th, 2009 06:18 pmSometimes I read a fic and I get a mental image right away. When possible I make an illustration and offer it to the author as a way to say thanks for their entertaining reading material. This one I could not shake from my imagination but had trouble finding just the right images. I finally did it.
This is for “The Hard Prayer” by Rheanna. http://www.goldenmaze.com/hardprayer.htm In this post apocalyptic AU, neither John or Rodney went to Atlantis. Instead they lived through a plague on Earth that left them each alone searching for survivors. The characters we meet are both damaged by their isolation, pushing their personality quirks into something much more serious. I've reced it before on my journal, but here it is again with a picture.
supernatural fan fic recs
Apr. 12th, 2009 12:48 pm“Two Highways East and a Quarter Mile North of Salvation” by notthequiettype wrote a creepy and well written post apocalyptic story where Dean and Sam travel on foot after the US is devastated by a plague. There’s great dialogue. It’s Wincest but non explicit. http://community.livejournal.com/slashfest/86790.html
"Maybe Tommorow" is a work in progress by read_2_much. A abrasive, foul-mouthed teen walks into a hunter bar looking for Dean. AU future fic centered around Ben Braeden. http://read-2-much.livejournal.com/919.html?view=1175
“Isochronism” by minkmix is a genderswap story with Dean being cursed to be a girl. Sam and Dean’s reactions to events are in character. Dean’s reaction (freak out) to the change in particular is very realistic. I like the subtle observations of the differences between male and female bodies, like the intensity of the sense of smell.
Part one: http://minkmix.livejournal.com/113816.html
There are more parts and sequels : http://minkmix.livejournal.com/tag/genderswap (more graphic than part one, no Wincest but OFC in one)

This is actually a comment I posted to Rahmi's journal. Longest damn comment I've every made, but I have been thinking about this show since I watched it yesterday. ( spoiler for the season finale of Terminator here )
Knowing review
Apr. 10th, 2009 06:08 pmI just got back from seeing Knowing, a movie with Nicholas Cage. I almost didn’t go because he has been very spotty in his films for the last few years and had not heard many good things about this film. I went anyway and was glad I did.
Here is a summary:
“Knowing is an action-thriller about a professor who stumbles across terrifying predictions about the future inside a time capsule, and then sets out to prevent them from coming true.”
It’s better than it sounds for several reasons. The acting was solid and the characters were not flat. It is a thriller that is thrilling with lots of fast action. The special effects are excellent and worth watching on the big screen. There are some very creepy moments, as well. You have to keep thinking all the time about the plot and the philosophy behind it. A central theme is about how the world runs—are events predetermined and part of a plan, or is it just random “shit happens”? I was surprised by the ending and that doesn’t happen very often anymore. The last half hour was the kind that you don’t dare leave your seat, even if you need to.
( great pictures under the cut )
